현대미술에서 지역은 더 이상 중립적인 장소가 아니다. 그것은 특정한 사회적 관계가 응축되는 현장이며, 문화 정책과 제도적 장치가 구체적으로 작동하는 공간이다. 따라서 지역은 단순한 배경이 아니라 예술 생산의 조건을 규정하는 구조로 이해되어야 한다.

인천은 이러한 조건이 복합적으로 교차하는 도시이다. 수도권의 일부로서 중심과 긴밀하게 연결되어 있으면서도, 동시에 주변으로 인식되는 이중적 위치에 놓여 있다. 이와 같은 위치성은 인천에서 활동하는 예술가들에게 독특한 상황을 형성한다. 특히 인천을 기반으로 작업하는 청년 시각 예술가는 지역 공동체의 구성원인 동시에 제도권 미술 시스템과 접속해야 하는 존재로서, 자연스럽게 경계적 위치에 서게 된다. 이 경계성은 단순한 정체성의 문제가 아니라, 오늘날 지역 미술이 작동하는 방식을 드러내는 하나의 구조적 조건이기도 하다.

이 전시는 인천에 거주하며 활동하는 청년 예술가들의 현재적 조건에서 출발한다. 이들이 인천에서 교육받고 머문다는 사실은 개인의 선택이면서 동시에 현실적 조건의 결과이기도 하다. 인천은 작업이 시작되는 장소이자 생활의 기반이지만, 동시에 예술적 지속 가능성을 끊임없이 시험하는 환경이기도 하다. 지역에서의 활동은 안정적인 제도적 기반을 제공하기보다, 오히려 제한된 전시 기회와 단기적인 지원 구조 속에서 이루어지는 경우가 많다.

이 과정에서 지역성은 중요한 문화적 가치로 호출되지만, 그 의미가 충분히 논의되기보다는 특정한 이미지나 서사로 단순화되기도 한다. 제도는 지역을 요구하지만, 그 지역은 종종 설명되어야 할 대상으로 고정된다. 결과적으로 예술가는 지역을 비판적으로 사유하기보다 지역을 대표하거나 해석하는 역할을 요구받게 되며, 이러한 상황은 작업의 방향을 조율하도록 만들기도 한다. 질문은 남지만, 때로는 유예된다.

이 전시에 참여한 작가들은 인천을 재현하거나 대변하기보다, 이곳에 머무르며 경험하는 감각과 조건을 각자의 시각적 언어로 드러낸다. 이들의 작업은 지역을 하나의 고정된 정체성으로 제시하지 않는다. 대신 지역이라는 조건 속에서 형성되는 불안정한 시간, 관계, 이동, 노동의 감각을 포착한다. 여기서 인천은 단순한 배경이 아니라 작업을 가능하게 하면서 동시에 제약하는 구조로 등장한다.

따라서 이 전시는 인천이라는 지역을 하나의 이미지로 제시하기보다, 지역에서 작업한다는 것이 어떤 의미인지 질문하는 자리이기도 하다. 작가들은 지역과 제도, 개인적 경험과 사회적 구조 사이의 경계에 서서 완전히 속하지 않는 위치에서 작업을 지속한다. 그 경계에서 드러나는 긴장과 감각은 오늘날 지역 미술의 현실을 비판적으로 사유하게 만드는 계기가 된다.

결국 중요한 것은 어디에 위치하고 있는가가 아니라, 어떤 조건 속에서 작업하고 있는가이다. 인천은 한계이자 가능성의 장소이며, 그 가능성은 개인의 노력만으로 실현되기 어렵다. 그것은 지역 미술을 둘러싼 제도와 환경, 그리고 지역에 대한 인식이 변화할 때 비로소 현실이 될 수 있다.

Incheon/Place of Boundary

In contemporary art, "the local" is no longer a neutral site. It is a field where specific social relations condense and a space where cultural policies and institutional apparatuses operate in concrete ways. Therefore, the local should be understood not merely as a backdrop, but as a structure that defines the conditions of artistic production.

Incheon is a city where these conditions intersect in complex ways. As part of the metropolitan area, it is intimately connected to the center, yet it simultaneously occupies a dual position perceived as the periphery. This positionality creates a unique situation for artists working in Incheon. In particular, young visual artists based in Incheon stand naturally at a liminal point—as members of the local community and, at the same time, as entities that must interface with the institutional art system. This liminality is not just a matter of identity; it is a structural condition that reveals how local art functions today.

This exhibition begins with the present conditions of young artists living and working in Incheon. The fact that they were educated and remain in Incheon is both a personal choice and a result of pragmatic circumstances. Incheon is the place where their work begins and the foundation of their daily lives, but it is also an environment that constantly tests their artistic sustainability. Activities in the region often take place within limited exhibition opportunities and short-term support structures rather than on a stable institutional footing.

In this process, "locality" is summoned as a significant cultural value, yet its meaning is often simplified into specific images or narratives rather than being fully discussed. The institution demands the local, but that locality is frequently fixed as an object to be explained. Consequently, instead of critically reflecting on the region, artists are requested to represent or interpret it, a situation that often forces them to calibrate the direction of their work. Questions remain, but they are sometimes deferred.

The artists in this exhibition do not seek to represent or speak for Incheon; instead, they reveal the sensations and conditions they experience while staying here through their respective visual languages. Their work does not present the local as a fixed identity. Instead, it captures the unstable senses of time, relationships, movement, and labor formed within the condition of the local. Here, Incheon emerges not as a mere background, but as a structure that both enables and constrains the work.

Thus, rather than presenting Incheon as a single image, this exhibition serves as a platform to question what it means to work within a region. Standing on the boundary between the local and the institution, and between personal experience and social structure, the artists continue their work from a position of not fully belonging. The tension and sensitivity revealed at that boundary provide an occasion to critically contemplate the reality of local art today.

Ultimately, what matters is not where one is located, but under what conditions one is working. Incheon is a place of both limitation and possibility, and that possibility is difficult to realize through individual effort alone. It can only become a reality when the institutions, environments surrounding local art, and the very perception of "the local" begin to change.
